Psittacine adenovirusis a viral disease that affects several species of parrots, especially young birds. It belongs to the Adenoviridae family and can cause serious health problems in infected birds.
This virus often affects the digestive tract, liver and other internal organs. Typical symptoms of adenovirus infection in parrots include lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhoea (often green or bloody), vomiting, dehydration and sudden death without previous symptoms. Some species, particularly anoles and koalas, may develop 'French peeping', where the birds' head and neck feathers fall out. In severe cases, the virus can cause liver and kidney failure. Infection is spread by direct contact with infected birds, their droppings or contaminated objects.
