Pacheco's disease

Pacheco's disease is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease that primarily affects parakeets. It is caused by a herpes virus of the Herpesviridae family. It is transmitted by the secretions and excretions of infected birds. Clinical signs are non-specific and may include sudden death, drowsiness, anorexia, fluffy feathers, vomiting and diarrhoea.  Some parrot species may have lesions in the oral cavity or around the eyes. In many cases, especially in the acute form of the disease, sudden death occurs without previous visible symptoms.
