Avian polyomavirus

A viral disease affecting mainly young birds of the family Polyomaviridae. It is characterised by sudden lethargy, neck stiffness and death within 24-48 h. Skin bleeding, abdominal distension and feather abnormalities may occur. Adults are immune but can shed the virus into the environment. The virus is spread horizontally by direct contact or contaminated faeces, and vertically from parents to offspring.
