Koi herpesvirus

Koi herpesvirus (KHV) is a highly contagious viral pathogen that affects carp and other Koi species. This virus can cause significant losses in fish populations, especially in tanks and ponds where fish are kept in close contact. The main symptoms of KHV infection are behavioural changes in fish such as lethargy, loss of appetite and reduced activity. Infected fish may also show signs of skin damage, such as ulcers or redness, and may have enlarged fins. In advanced stages of infection, complications such as drug resistance and death can occur. Preventing the spread of KHV is essential and includes, for example, checking the health of new fish before they are introduced into existing stocks.
