Imported Trichinella: Parasites know no borders

15. 5. 2026

For the second time this year, our accredited parasitology laboratory has detected Trichinella spp. larvae in imported wild boars, this time from Poland.

This finding further confirms the trend of detecting Trichinella spp. in imported animals within the EU. In recent years, our laboratory has detected this parasite in imported pigs from Hungary (1), Poland, and Germany (2).

Not only international trade in meat but also the cross-border movement of game can represent a potential source of infection for susceptible hosts in the Czech Republic as well, thereby creating a risk of introducing the infection into domestic populations of wild game.

For the reasons stated above, we recommend not underestimating the importance of testing meat for trichinella (Trichinella spp.) and paying close attention to this issue.
