Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis in pigs is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium avium ssp. avium. The disease can be transmitted to humans under certain circumstances.

Description

Tuberculosis can be diagnosed in the field by a tuberculin test.

Suspect slaughtered, culled or dead animals should be necropsied (or examined at the abattoir) and samples taken for laboratory confirmation.

Intravital diagnosis of samples in the laboratory has limited predictive value and is only used in cases where there is no reason to slaughter or cull the animal, e.g. preventive testing of zoo animals.

Methods used
Investigation will include bacterioscopy, culture, histology and PCR.

Bacterioscopy by Ziehl-Neelsen staining is a rapid but only indicative method. Bacterioscopy is always performed with culture, but can be ordered separately.

The culture examination is a sensitive method, the examination time is 6 weeks. In case of a positive result, the colonies are confirmed by PCR.

Samples can also be tested directly by PCR.

Histological examination is performed to observe the characteristic changes in the tissue, supplemented by Ziehl-Neelsen staining.

Chronic bacterial disease that causes nodular granulomas in the lungs and adjacent lymph nodes. The liver, kidneys, uterus and other organs are also affected. Symptoms include anorexia, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing and enlargement of the lymph nodes.

FAQ

Which samples are suitable for testing?

Refrigerated or frozen samples of lymph nodes or organs are sent for testing. The sample must not be frozen for histological examination.

For intravital examination of samples in the laboratory, a faecal sample will be sent.
