Histological or histopathological examination is a microscopic examination of tissues specially taken for this purpose (fixed in 10% formalin solution) and stained. Tissues for this examination may be taken at necropsy or by biopsy from live animals (particularly for dermatological and oncological diagnosis). Histopathological examination allows the microscopic manifestations of the disease and the severity of tissue damage to be assessed.
Cytological examination is the microscopic evaluation of findings and changes, especially in cellular material, e.g. from impressions, smears, tracheal washings or urine sediments.
